Filling Food Pantries with Loaves & Fishes

August 13, 2018

Giving a helping hand to the community is a core value of Red Classic, and our Stewardship Committee regularly organizes events for Red Classic teammates to act on that value. Throughout the month of July, we collected donations of non-perishable food items at Red Classic corporate headquarters for Loaves & Fishes’ food drive.

Loaves & Fishes is based in Charlotte, NC, and operates a network of 30 food pantries across Mecklenburg County. Since 1975 they’ve sought to provide nutritious food to people in the community facing economic hardships. In 2017 alone they fed 76,517 people – that’s enough people to fill the Bank of America stadium!

Something that makes Loaves & Fishes stand out among other food pantries in the area is that they operate on the client choice food pantry model. This model allows clients to choose which foods they know their family will eat from a nutritionally-balanced shopping list. Pantries with this model resemble a small grocery store and give clients a sense of control and dignity. It also cuts down on food waste and more easily accommodates a wider variety of special diets.

We’re happy we were able to contribute to the great work that Loaves & Fishes is doing for our neighbors in the community!
