The teammate experience is of high enough importance that we’ve included it in our vision statement that “we strive to be the Employer of Choice.” It should come as no surprise that drivers and diesel technicians make up the majority of our team, so when we improve their work experience it positively impacts many people. Here are some of the changes we’ve made over the last year to improve the work lives of our driver and diesel technician teammates:
Throughout 2019, the Fleet Maintenance department has focused on investing in new training opportunities for diesel technician teammates including a mix of online and classroom courses to improve their skills and knowledge of new technology. A recent example included a visit by a group of Red Classic technicians to Mack Trucks Academy in Atlanta, GA. The group learned about the latest updates to Mack’s diagnostic software and new features of the latest truck models. We plan to hold regular, on-site trainings across our network in collaboration with the Academy.
We also began a partnership with Diesel Laptops, a provider of specialized diesel diagnostic equipment and training for the commercial truck, construction, automobile, agriculture and off-highway markets. Training opportunities like these allow our diesel technicians to grow their skills and advance their careers, while also resulting in more efficient and cost-effective service for our customers.
Safety comes first at Red Classic, so in 2018 we created “Toolbox Talks” for diesel technician teammates. Held several times a month in each shop, Toolbox Talks are informal huddles led by the area fleet maintenance manager to discuss relevant safety topics. These quick huddles give teammates an opportunity to voice any concerns and keep safety top-of-mind.
In the spring, we invested in our fleet by upgrading our Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to Trimble’s PeopleNet devices. Our driver teammates spend most of their work day in their truck and use their ELD for multiple functions. The upgraded hardware and software in the new ELD system is more user-friendly and makes daily tasks much easier
To show appreciation for all our driver teammates who excel at keeping safety first, we established a Safe Driver Awards program. The program recognizes Red Classic drivers who have completed a full calendar year of driving without a contributory collision. Each award recipient receives a certificate and special pin during the ceremony. Drivers who reach five years of safe driving receive an exclusive watch, and after ten years receive a gold ring. This special event is an important time to stop and thank them for the hard work they put in every day to keep our roads safe.
Throughout 2019, we’ve made significant investments in the technology used by our Operations and Fleet Maintenance departments. These include upgrades to our transportation management system, track and trace technology and maintenance management system. The result is more user-friendly technology that enables all teammates to work more efficiently, allowing us to provide better service to our customers.
Most recently, we onboarded a new mobile app for teammate communication. Whether a teammate works in the field, on the road or in a corporate office, they’re able to connect with one another and stay informed about company news.
Improving the driver and technician experience is a continual process. Red Classic is committed to creating a work environment where all teammates have the tools they need to thrive.
